Special Educational Needs and Disabilities

Merriott Primary School welcomes children of all abilities and all backgrounds.  We aim to provide children with a secure and stimulating environment in which they can develop their full potential and learn to respect themselves, others and their immediate and wider environment.  Children are entitled to the widest possible educational experience, and it is our policy to provide pupils who have special educational needs with support tailored to their individual needs, so that the child is able to have access to a broad and balanced curriculum.

Our Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Coordinator (SENDCo) is:

Mrs Maria McLelland

Our SEND Governor is:

Mrs. Jill Tutcher

At the heart of the work of every primary school class is a continuous cycle of planning, teaching and assessment which takes account of the wide range of abilities and interests of the children.  The majority of children will learn and progress within these arrangements.  However, from time to time, some children will experience difficulties in school.  These may be minor and temporary, or occasionally more severe and long lasting.  In order to meet the needs of all pupils, the school operates the graduated response as recommended a by the Code of Practice (2014).  This offers a positive approach to early co-operation between school and parents in identifying and meeting any potential learning difficulty.  Merriott Primary School believes that early intervention is vital to ensure children are supported to enable them to make good progress.

The school is committed to creating an atmosphere in which individual differences are valued and we aim to help children develop confidence, self-esteem and a positive attitude to their own learning.  We welcome close links with parents and recognise their importance as partners in the education of their children.
