Helping Children Stay Safe Online
At Merriott Primary School, we recognise that technology plays an important role in children's lives, offering many opportunities to learn, communicate and be creative. We are committed to helping our pupils develop the knowledge and skills they need to use technology safely, responsibly and respectfully.
Online safety is taught throughout our curriculum and is reinforced through assemblies, class discussions and parental engagement. We believe that keeping children safe online is most effective when school and home work together.
Useful Online Safety Resources
The following organisations provide excellent advice and support for children, parents and carers.
A dedicated website for children, offering practical advice on staying safe, managing feelings online, gaming, social media and friendships.
Free, confidential support for children and young people on any issue that may be worrying them, including online concerns.
Guidance for parents and carers on social media, online gaming, cyberbullying, screen time and keeping children safe online.
If you are worried about online sexual abuse, grooming or inappropriate online communication, CEOP provides advice and a reporting service for children, young people and adults.
Supporting Your Child at Home
Parents and carers can help keep children safe online by:
- Talking regularly about their online experiences.
- Setting appropriate parental controls.
- Agreeing age-appropriate screen time limits.
- Encouraging children to tell a trusted adult if something online makes them feel worried or uncomfortable.
- Keeping devices in shared family spaces where possible.
