PE, Games and Adventurous Activities Education Curriculum at  Merriott and Haselbury Plucknett Primary School Federation

Intent

At Merriott and Haselbury Federation it is our intention to develop a lifelong love of physical activity in all young people who try to be the best they can be. We aim to help ensure a positive and healthy physical and mental outlook in the future and help young people to develop fundamental movement skills alongside lifelong skills such as being active and resilient in order to thrive and succeed.

Implementation

The National Curriculum and Early Years Foundation stage statutory frameworks provide the basis for our inclusive curriculum and we use resources from Real PE and the twinkl move it curriculum to deliver this. We provide the opportunity for progression across the full breadth of the PE National Curriculum for KS1 and KS2 for both indoor and outdoor PE including swimming and dance and we recognise that our PE and sport curriculum are distinctly different but that the fundamental movement skills, rules, tactics and strategies and healthy participation we learn in PE can be applied in our sport and outdoor learning. This progression is clearly identified on progression maps.

It is also our intention to ensure that every child has access to at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day (including PE lessons) and to minimise uninterrupted sedentary time.

Our PE, sport and adventurous activities education curriculum is developed and monitored to ensure the needs of the children in mixed aged classes are met in an exciting and interesting format. We offer a range of enrichment experiences including non-traditional sports such as Archery and Kayaking. Furthermore, with our focus sporting days, partnership with SASP, outdoor experiences and attendance at organised sporting events in the area, we ensure skills acquisition and application which has a local exit route from school. We identify the least active children who are given extra opportunities to participate in SASP PE intervention activities.

We ensure, through training and support, that teachers have the knowledge and skills they need to feel confident in teaching all areas of PE, regardless of their main areas of expertise, and for teachers and coaches to have an organised progression of skills throughout the school in each key stage. Lessons from the real PE scheme are used alongside progression maps to ensure that children are given the opportunity to practise existing skills and also build on these to develop and apply new or more advanced skills. We encourage positive learning behaviours in every lesson.

There is a structure to the lesson sequence whereby prior learning is reviewed and opportunities for demonstration of skills (I do), guided practise (We do) and independent activities (You do) are built into lessons. Interwoven into the teaching sequence are key assessment questions including building the children’s self- evaluation skills. These allow teachers to assess the different levels of understanding at various points in the lesson and also allow time to recap concepts where necessary, helping to embed learning.

We also offer after school sports and activity clubs as well as signposting parents to out of school sports offers for pupil premium families and children with low activity levels.

Impact

Our PE, sport and adventurous activities education curriculum is guided and overseen by the PE curriculum leader, who monitors, evaluates and reviews the learning and teaching through communication with the children, teachers and PE coaches, learning walks and providing training and resources for staff. The PE lead will review the impact of PE in more detail in an annual impact statement based on a PE development plan.

Each unit of Core Real PE, sport and adventurous activities education is mapped to ensure that learners develop detailed knowledge and skills across the full breadth of the PE curriculum through engaging and age-appropriate curriculum content. The high quality and consistent approach to PE teaching, should significantly improve attainment in knowledge and skills in PE. The impact of using the full range of Real PE and twinkl move it resources will increase the profile of sport, PE and physical activity across the school. Our approach results in a high quality and engaging PE education.

Children become enthusiastic and motivated PE learners and are able to improve their own fitness and skills. They leave us with an awareness of the need for an active lifestyle and ready for their future education journey. We will measure this using pupil voice surveys.
